Practice News and Calendar (February 2012)

By Patrick Przyborowski

Dear Practice Friends,

February is typically a month when our instructors place their shoulders to the grind stone as they study and practice for levels of certification and/or continuing education; we call this a month of “less talking, more doing.” It’s also an opportunity to look for deeper understanding in the fundamentals of the methods we teach.

To that end I recently re-read Joseph Pilates’ 1945 text, “Return to Life Through Contrology.” In his introduction he points to the importance of breathing: “Breathing is the first act of life, and the last. Our very life depends on it.” It was a reminder to me of just how integral conscious breathing is to the Pilates Method.

Because breathing is involuntary, it’s something that is easy to let fade into the background of our awareness, and so it may seem odd at times to have your instructor calling your attention to your breath with every single move you make. The Pilates breath pattern of inhaling through the nose and exhaling deeply through pursed lips helps to activate our deep support muscles that surround our core. Breathing into the lateral and posterior aspects of the lungs draws oxygen into underutilized areas. Deep breathing also helps us avoid unnecessary tension in the neck and shoulders and it aids in relaxation, all great stuff.

Take a moment to observe your own breath pattern right now. If you find your self breathing shallowly, try pushing the air out of the lungs first then accompany it with a deep inhale. Feels great, yes? During your sessions at Practice in February, I encourage you to treat yourself to some deep, conscious breaths. Don’t worry about forgetting to breathe, we will be there to remind you!

Finally, thank you again for all your support, and also a warm welcome goes out to our new practitioners in January:

Trish Caramico, Mindy Damstra, Heidi Donnelly, Judy Lipton, Susan Strong, and Denise Swick

Best wishes,

Patrick Przyborowski

Practice Calendar February 2012

Class Changes

After a successful rotator cuff surgery last month, Joy will return to teach Hatha Yoga and Pilates Yoga Fusion beginning Thursday, February 7th. She will be in an arm sling for several more weeks, which means she will be providing more verbal cueing than demonstrating, and this will give her more time to help her students correct their form. Welcome back, Joy!

Practice Abroad!

Where in the World is Vipal?

Vipal Patel, while on overseas assignment for a year, took his picture from inside the U.S Embassy, but which U.S. Embassy is it?  Can you guess where Vipal is? Be the first to reply with the correct country to win your very own Practice tee. Here’s a hint: He’s not in Kansas anymore, but he’s not in OZ either. However in the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy and her cohorts run into a dilemma that requires the intervention of Glinda the Good Witch. The “dilemma” they run into is intimately related to this country.

Would you like to have your very own Practice tee for free? Here’s 2 ways to get one:

  1. Take a trip somewhere, and let us know that you would be willing to take a pic in a fun location (preferably not standing in front of a sign that gives away your location!) and submit it to us for the Practice Abroad feature in our newsletter. We’ll give you a tee to take with you on your trip.
  2. Be the first to figure out where the current Practitioner is in their photo. Reply by email to Patrick at pprzyborowski@gmail.com. The first correct respondent wins a free tee!

From the Well blog at the New York Times website, Tara Parker Pope shares some fascinating research results that suggests a daily walk or jog could alter the risk of developing Alzheimer’s or change the course of the disease if it begins in some people.

A Cautionary Tale about Taking Yoga Too Far

The New York Times wrote an article earlier in January on the dangers of trying to do more in yoga than you as a student are ready for. Our resident yoga instructor, Joy Karl, in discussion with Patrick, noted that the smaller group sizes in the Practice studio make it possible for her to tailor modifications for clients based on their needs and their level of readiness, something that isn’t possible in larger venues. When done properly, and within the ranges appropriate for the individual, yoga is fantastic for developing flexibility, balance and strength.

December News (2011)

By Patrick Przyborowski

Dear Practice Friends,

Happy Holidays from Practice!

On behalf of all the staff at Practice, I want to wish you and your family a very happy holiday. We are deeply grateful to the members of our community who have been with us since we opened three years ago, and we are equally grateful to the new practitioners who have joined us along the way. We continue to get positive feedback each week from clients who describe the culture of our studio as positive, encouraging, optimistic, and challenging in a supportive way. You are as much a part of what makes the Practice culture special as we are, and for that we thank you a hundred times over!

Thanks also to everyone who patiently received their postural analysis in November. This is the first step in a series of initiatives for 2012-2013 to provide you with increasingly better programming, based partly on assessment methods like the postural analysis, as well as feedback from you about your goals and desires. In January we will be asking clients to fill out a brief questionnaire designed to help you identify some tangible goals for the new year. If you haven’t yet had a postural analysis, but would like to have one, please reply to this email and I will be happy to line you up with an instructor.

There are a couple of significant changes coming to the studio in January that I want to draw your attention to: We were fortunate over the last two years to be able to maintain our current pricing, but owing to rising costs we will need to increase appointments and classes by $2 this year. This will make it possible for us to maintain the high quality of both our facilities and our instruction. We understand that price increases are never easy. We hope this won’t present you with a hardship. Please click on the link below for a PDF of our new rates for 2012.

We are also introducing a Senior Instructor Position at Practice. Instructors who apply the principles of practice – awareness, focus, self-discipline and creativity – over thousands of hours of teaching, acquire a depth of experience that they share with their clients directly as well as with the other instructors, who in turn share it with their clients. The idea of a practice lineage is an integral part of the philosophy of the studio, one that will yield increasing gains in terms of the quality of instruction you receive. Please click on the link below for a PDF of the full announcement.

Finally, thank you again for all your support, and also a warm welcome goes out to our new practitioners in November: Amanda Bryant, Sarah Butterbaugh, Amiee Calabrese, Suzie Cox, Helen Guste, Mary Haley, Jessica Hanchak, Patti Ruegsegger, and Melissa Ungerleider

Best wishes,

Patrick Przyborowski

New Senior Instructor Position at Practice Starting in 2012, we will take another step toward creating a lineage of world-class instructors by establishing a Senior Instructor (SI) position at Practice. Please click here for a PDF copy of the full announcement, including the criteria for the new position, a brief bio for our first SI, Patrick Przyborowski, as well as the new rates for Senior Instructors.

New Rates for 2012

Please click here for a PDF copy of our new Rate Card for 2012, which includes pricing for instructors and senior instructor.

Turkey Trot Completed!

It was great to see Practice friends and family down at the run in Miamisburg last Thursday. Pictured above are Patrick with his mom, sister, two nieces and nephew. Three generations of Trotters! There were over 8,000 participants this year, a new record. Jim Beyer, Julie Beyer’s husband (see Julie below), came in 4th place this year, finishing in 26:24. That’s a 5:24 pace. Wow, great job, Jim!

New Artwork Arrives!

In honor of our third anniversary in November, Practice commissioned local fabulous artist, Julie Beyer, to create a new painting for our studio. She is pictured here with her son, Hank, and the new work that hangs just above the bench at our entrance. Thank you, Julie, you did a fantastic job! To see more of Julie’s paintings, check out her gallery by clicking here.

Clean Carpets! While changing out the springs and rollers on all the reformers, we took the opportunity to have the carpets cleaned by the team that does it best: Ewing Floor Maintenance. Thanks go out to Pete Hagar and the rest of the Ewing team for doing a great job!

Sofa for a Good Home! Patty MacDonald has a 90″, 3 cushion couch that she would like to give to someone who needs one. November News and Calendar (2011)

By Patrick Przyborowski

Dear Practice Friends,

During the month of November, all clients attending private, semi-private, trio or quartet sessions will have the opportunity to receive a complimentary postural analysis, a great tool for determining target training areas in your work with your instructor.

The analysis takes 10-15 minutes to complete, during which time your instructor will have you stand near a plumb line to look at your alignment from head to toe, including front, back, and side views. Asymmetries, such as having one shoulder lower than the other, can be indicative of muscular imbalances, some of which can be corrected through a proper training regimen. One of our main programming goals at Practice is to help you move freely, now and for the rest of your life. I hope you will allow us to improve our understanding of your training needs by participating in this program
assessment.

Thank you for helping us to update our client profiles during October. We will integrate any changes in your medical history with the postural analysis to create a more effective training strategy for you.

Please check out the new 30 minute classes, TRX and Jumpboard, that we are starting in November. See below for details!

Finally, thank you again for all your support, and also a warm welcome goes out to our new practitioners in October:

Chris Danis, Pamela Day, Angel Fuson, Miriam Harewood-Makola, Kathleen Neufarth, Vipal Patel, Terry Stewart, Janice Wackerman.

Best wishes,

Patrick Przyborowski

Please remember to wear your socks while in the studio.

Even if you are coming for a yoga class, please keep your socks on until you are on your mat and then put them back on when the class is over.

Research: The Effects of Exercise on Depression

From the New York Times’ “Well” column, check out this article on the effects of exercise on clinical depression when paired with medication:

Prescribing Exercise to Treat Depression

Exercise for People Over 50

Debby Goldenberg was kind enough to bring this gem of an exercise to our attention. Take a look!

Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, 10 lb. potato bags
With a 5 lb. potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

Then try 25 lb. potato bags and then eventually get to where you can lift a 50 lb. potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute (I’m at this level)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Ella Bella Cookies

When Mandy Groszko’s daughter Ella was found to have a gluten intolerance, she set out to find products that were both gluten free and good tasting. Says Mandy:

“I wanted to make sure she enjoyed all the food her big sister did. I was very disappointed in the chocolate chip cookies available. So I started making my own. Now I want to share my yummy cookies with you. Enjoy the best cookies around, which just happen to be gluten free!”

They’ve passed Patrick’s taste test (2 times) with flying colors. Please contact Mandy at ellabellacookies@gmail.com. Also:

March News (2011)

By Patrick Przyborowski

Dear Practice Friends,

In the coming weeks you will see some new art on the long wall underneath the TRX bar. The four new images (coming soon!) symbolize core principles of practice that are germinating in our organization: awareness, focus, self-discipline, and creativity. Look around the studio, and you will begin to notice their influence in everything from the physical environment to the teaching styles of our instructors and the quality of the instruction we offer to you. Look within, and you may be delighted to find these principles taking root or even blooming in your mind and body.

There are so many things I can say about these principles, and I will – in the coming months look for links to articles in our blog in which I ask and look for answers to questions such as, “What is practice, anyway?”, “Does practice really make perfect?”, and “Why does practice work for some and not others?”  I believe that our core principles are intimately related to these questions, and I look forward to dialoguing with you about them in person and via the web.

Best wishes,

Patrick Przyborowski

January News (2011)

By Patrick Przyborowski

Dear Practice Friends,

Happy New Year (coming up shortly)! For many, the days leading up to January 1st present opportunities to think about what has been accomplished over the course of the current year and consider what is possible for the next year. I’m a fan of fresh starts. They can happen on any day of the year, at any moment of any day, though I acknowledge that there is a strong appeal in charting your commitments in a brand new calendar.

New Year resolutions can be a hit or miss event, depending on a number of variables, one of the most prominent being that people often set goals that are unrealistic, or they fail to break an audacious goal into smaller, bite-sized action-steps.

There’s also another variable that often goes unnoticed and it has a direct bearing on your ability to make positive change that is both achievable and sustainable. Click on this link for the full text.

When we look forward in time, envisioning ourselves new and improved, we tend to create a static image, a picture of a better self, to which we grant a sense of permanence. We set our goals to achieve peak fitness with the assumption that, having reached our goals, we will stay like that forever, or at least for the rest of the year. But in the same breath you and I both know that progress in action is messy. So we have competing claims:

Progress envisioned = “To infinity and beyond! Right now!”

Progress applied = “Two steps forward, one step back”

By being aware of this dynamic, we can generate complementary claims instead through a few simple shifts:

  1. Break the year into three phases: pre-peak, peak, and post-peak.
  2. In plotting out your timeline on the calendar, allow enough time – around 4 months – to reach your peak. This pre-peak phase is enjoyable when you start to see both the steps forward and the steps back as a natural part of the growth cycle.
  3. Plan for both “transformation training” and “maintenance training”: The training you do to reach your peak should be designed to generate the changes you wish to achieve. Upon reaching your peak, switch to a maintenance program for the remainder of the year. Seriously, your muscles and joints will thank you.
  4. Plan for, and enjoy, your post-peak phase. The key here is to allow for those life events – holiday meals, vacations on a beach – that will inevitably impact your body and your mindset. If your goal is to reduce your waistline by 3 inches during your peak phase, plan for a 1-inch gain from September through December. It’s most likely going to happen. If you know this, and you agree from the outset that a net loss of 2 inches on your waist over the course of the year is a win for you, then you can experience Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas or Hanukkah with a sense of victory rather than being miserable with guilt.

The point of a New Year’s resolution is to do something positive for ourselves, so that at the end of the day we are happier than we were before. Some folks are happier by choosing not to make any resolutions at all, which is fine. Regardless of whether you approach the New Year strategically or spontaneously, I hope you’ll make Practice an integral part of your vision for a healthy body and mind in 2011.

Best wishes,

Patrick Przyborowski

Check out this article from the New York Times that relates a recent experiment in exercising before breakfast.

Note: If you are experimenting with this yourself, make sure you do your exercise early and then eat breakfast (within 30-45 minutes) after your workout. Delaying your first meal in the day can actually slow your metabolism!

December News (2010)

By Patrick Przyborowski

Dear Practice Friends,

The holiday season is upon us! And my advice: enjoy. Too often, the holidays are experienced as guilty pleasure. Try this instead: For those days you have parties and family gatherings, mark them on your calendar as “free,” meaning guilt-free or care-free. And then moderate food and drink for the days you don’t have events. When you look at the page, you should see that the party days are the exception, rather than the rule. And if you actually have 16+ free days marked on your calendar for December, well….give me a call. I want to party with you, champ.

But before you light out for your holiday mixer, pick a day in early January and write “stop” in your calendar, which means that the holiday season ends then and there.  Next month I’ll share some strategies for re-envisioning the New Year’s resolution!

Happy Holidays,

Patrick Przyborowski
